Fifteen Days to Oblivion

When the Broncos lined up to play the winless New York Giants on a nationally televised Sunday night game, optimism, and maybe a dash of overconfidence filtered up into the mile high night sky.  After all, the home team was 3-1, with two impressive division wins, and a rare romp over the Dallas Cowboys, one of the toughest teams in the NFC.  It appeared team co-captain Trevor Siemian had put the quarterback question to rest, and Denver was aiming at a return to the post-season.

What a difference a handful of days can make.

The Broncos were stunned by the Giants, and then shut-out in the very comfortable confines of Stub Hub Stadium in Los Angeles, with half of the small crowd clad in orange before turning the ball over five times to the division rival Chiefs on Monday Night Football. By the time the final whistle sounded, 15-days passed, from the loss to the Giants October 15th to error filled loss in Kansas City on the October 30th.

It was far more trick than treat for Broncos Country on Halloween, as the entire organization was reeling at Dove Valley, where more questions than answers were provided during Coach Vance Joseph's press conference.

Over the last three losses, the Broncos have averaged 9.6 points a game and a defense that is so unhappy, they actually posted like an angry President on Twitter.

That's right. Locker room issues have oozed out into social media.

From playoff contenders to oblivion in just over two weeks.

Does it make more sense now that John Elway considered reaching for the oft-injured and now retired Tony Romo? Do the pre-season trade rumors of Bengals back-up A.J. McCarron appear reasonable?

I'm not going to pile on Trevor. He's a very smart football player. I think he is an NFL quarterback, but I think he is best suited as a quality spot starter and back-up, much like former coach and quarterback Gary Kubiak. It was always the eye test -- he still holds on to the ball too long, he can't see well over the defense and the low trajectory is why his passes get blocked at the line of scrimmage more than any other starting signal caller.

Siemian is also pretty tough, he has been taking way too much punishment behind a not very improved offensive line.

And maybe the Broncos should still contact Romo, if anything else just to get him out of the broadcast booth. He has to be the most annoying color analysis guy in the history of televised football.

Now, we awaken to a new day.

Oh, hello Brock!

Wouldn't it be cool if the quarterback, whose salary is primarily being paid by the Cleveland Browns steps in to salvage the season and save Denver from football oblivion this year?

It would be cool, but anyone behind center right now is going to need more help.

The upside of last week's upside down loss in Kansas City is the team did rush for 177 yards. If the defense isn't too exhausted after seven games, they are still one of the best units in the game. That said, Osweiler will not be able to count to three-Mississippi very often without having a defender in his hip pocket. He still has that big slow wind-up and like his buddy Trevor, he tends to hang on to the ball too long.

Osweiler also has to know this is likely his last shot at starting in the NFL. Although, I'm thinking the winless Browns may have a tinge of regret, not giving him a shot there. Either way, Brock starts for a losing squad against the 7-1 Eagles in Philadelphia this week. It appears this Halloween could haunt the Broncos at least one more week, with our old pals the New England Patriots on the horizon after that.

The Broncos will need the 2015 version of Brock, the one who beat those Pats at home a scant two seasons ago.

Things changed a whole bunch in a mere 15-days, perhaps all is not lost this year. At least it will be fascinating to see if a quarterback, who was originally presumed to be the Broncos' signal caller post-Manning can save his own future over the next few weeks.

If not, I understand Chad Kelly is finally able to warm-up in the bullpen.
