The Broncos Quarterback Shuffle Begins Anew

The dearth of quality NFL quarterbacks is making tomorrow's 2024 draft far more interesting than it should be.

Hey, tell me if you heard this one before, "The Denver Broncos need a quarterback."

As the Yogi Berra proverb reminds us, "It's like deja vu, all over again."

The seemingly endless quarterback shuffle is on deck for Denver in yet another NFL Draft. With the twelfth pick in this year's annual aim for talent, fans have no idea what to expect.

This is a Broncos Country that is still adjusting to new uniforms and the addition of a Wilson at quarterback. No, Russell Wilson isn't back, it's the other Wilson, who has had an even rougher road than the guy Denver is paying 85 million dollars to NOT be here.

Forever a football town, the Mile High City may finally be considering changing to hoops or a hockey place. Baseball may even be a threat if the team found an ownership group that knew something about...baseball.

Fans have heard about 2,397 rumors per hour this week regarding the moves the Broncos may or may not make.

To me, it sure seems like the ask to move up and maybe make a run at J.J. McCarthy has become far too expensive for a team that spent too much draft capital obtaining Wilson, Russell. And thus, the addition of Wilson, Zach, in case no future signal caller Broncos want falls to them at the pick number 12.

Which brings us to all of the new rumors about Denver trading back in the first round to regain some of that lost draft capital. After all, the team needs more than a quarterback.

Oregon signal caller Bo Nix could be there at 12, but in a league that is desperate for the key position, teams are going to be reaching all day long. I mean really reaching to get more arms on rosters. This includes the top spots on the draft board as well.

If Denver trades back, I don't think Nix will be there -- if that is indeed their back-up plan if they can't mortage their future moving up the board to get McCarthy.

The NFL Draft isn't science. It's rolling the dice, a crapshoot, a dart in the wind (we'll stick with dart, this is a family show), a leap of Faith, a gamble, it's like what happens when a team picks Paxton Lynch in the first round.

For the record, I liked that pick. Nice kid, good college player, the pro game simply moved too fast for him. The game overwhelms a bunch of college players turning pro.

How hard? Really hard, especially at this altitude: the Broncos have been drafting for 63-years heading into tomorrow, and they've never drafted a Hall-of-Fame QB.

Elway and Manning were obtained via the trade. The third time was a bridge too far, Russell Wilson may end up with Elway and Manning in the HoF, but his age and insistence on extending some plays didn't fit Coach Sean Payton's offense. I realize some fans think Denver ditched the wrong guy, and time may very well prove them right.

In the meanwhile, the draft is upon us, and the Broncos need to be very careful with the pick. At least the current front office needs to be careful. The Penner-Walton and Associates ownership crew has spent more money than I'll ever see to buy a team and some players, and they are learning how hungry the fan base is to win.

Bo Nix may not be the answer. J.J. McCarthy may not be the answer. Trading back doesn't feel like the answer. However, it will be entertaining, until we revisit the season heading into next year's draft. May the shuffle be over for 5-10 years!

If the shuffle isn't over, this deja vu seems to be a thing.
